Power BI vs Looker Studio — Free vs Paid BI Tools

Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio) is free and great for Google ecosystem reports. Power BI is a paid professional BI platform with far more depth. Here's when each makes sense.

The Short Answer

Looker Studio wins if your data is entirely in Google's ecosystem (GA4, Google Ads, BigQuery, Google Sheets) and you need free, quick reports for marketing or campaign performance.

Power BI wins for everything else — SQL databases, multi-source joins, complex DAX calculations, large-scale data models, scheduled refreshes, and enterprise sharing. It's a professional BI platform; Looker Studio is a reporting tool.

When to Use Looker Studio

  • You only need to report on Google Analytics, Google Ads, or BigQuery data
  • Budget is zero — literally free
  • You need quick marketing campaign dashboards shared via link
  • Your team doesn't have Power BI licenses
  • Reports are simple, single-source, and don't require row-level security

When to Use Power BI

  • You have data in SQL databases, Excel, cloud sources, or APIs
  • You need to join data from multiple sources in one model
  • You need complex calculations (YoY growth, rolling averages, custom KPIs)
  • You need row-level security so different users see different data
  • You need reliable scheduled refresh and enterprise governance
  • You're already in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem

Verdict: Looker Studio for Google data, Power BI for everything else

Looker Studio is genuinely excellent for what it does — and free is hard to beat for simple marketing reports. But as soon as your data lives outside Google's world, or you need real data modeling, Power BI is the clear winner. The ₹700–1,400/user/month cost is trivial compared to the hours saved by proper dashboards.
